Why the cheapest price is not always the cheapest fill
A station can be 2p a litre cheaper and still cost you more. If it is 9 miles away, you burn fuel getting there and back — and on a 45-litre tank that round trip can swallow the whole saving. So this tool ranks stations by net saving: what the fill saves you against the typical local price, minus what the drive costs at your car's MPG.
It compares each station against the median price of that fuel in your search radius — the price a typical station there charges, and the honest answer to "cheaper than what?". A median rather than an average on purpose: forecourts occasionally report a price that is plainly wrong, and one odd reading is enough to drag an average and overstate the saving. If nothing in range beats that median, the tool says so rather than crowning a winner that saves nothing.
Leave MPG blank and it ranks on price alone, because the drive cannot be priced without it. The same arithmetic powers the fuel-cost calculator and the MPG calculator, so the three never disagree.
