Work out how much a journey will cost before you set off — a few numbers, and you're done.

How far are you driving? One way or total — whatever you want the cost for. E.g. 240. Your car's real fuel use MPG = miles per gallon. Your dashboard likely overstates this — try 10–15% lower than the sticker number for a truer figure. E.g. 42. Current fuel price Pence per litre — grab it from the pump or our price search. E.g. 149.9.

This is an estimate. Real-world fuel use depends on your car, load, tyres and how you drive. It uses the standard UK conversion of 4.54609 litres per gallon.

How the maths works

Your journey uses miles ÷ MPG gallons of fuel. Multiply by the litres-per-gallon conversion and the price, and you get the total cost. It's the same formula fuel-cost tables use — no hidden assumptions.
