Find your car's real fuel efficiency — not the optimistic number from the showroom, the one it actually does.

How to get the numbers right: fill up, note the mileage (or just reset the trip meter), drive normally, fill up again. The fuel you put in on the second fill and the miles since the first fill are what you need.

Miles driven since your last fill-up From your trip meter or the difference between two odometer readings. E.g. 320. Fuel you put in at the second fill Litres, from the pump. E.g. 38.

Uses the standard UK definition of a gallon (4.54609 litres). For the number your dashboard tends to show, this is the honest real-world figure.

What does MPG tell you?

Miles per gallon is the standard UK fuel-economy figure. Knowing your real number lets you estimate trip costs (try our fuel cost calculator) and spot if fuel use has crept up — often a sign of a service item, tyre pressure or heavy driving style.
