Supermarkets treat fuel as a way to bring shoppers through the door, not a profit centre on its own — so they often price aggressively, especially Asda and Morrisons, historically known for setting the pace on price cuts.
In areas with several independent stations competing directly with each other, local price wars can undercut supermarket prices. Motorway-adjacent supermarkets, and ones in areas with little competition, often price closer to average rather than aggressively.
Assumptions about "supermarkets are always cheaper" are exactly the kind of stale, generic advice that doesn't hold up area by area. Checking real, current prices for your specific location — not a general rule of thumb — is the only way to actually know what's cheapest near you right now.
